‘Back in the office’

sit-2Bstand

It’s Backcare Awareness Week and this year the theme is ‘Back in the Office’, focusing on the back and shoulder problems office workers encounter which can seriously affect their quality of life and their ability to carry out their day to day duties. Sitting for 8 hours per day, 5 days a week can have a serious impact on your health. ‘Sitting is the new smoking’ and back pain now accounts for half of all chronic pain people suffer and is the leading cause of sickness absence from work – it accounts for a total of 31 million days per year!

The statistics are shocking and the causes well known but employers are still not taking preventative measures to aid the situation.

  • Work stations and environments are not set up correctly
  • Preventative measures are not taken – ergonomic furniture
  • High workloads and pressures don’t allow employees to take much needed breaks
  • Tasks are repetitive and there is no change to the seated position over an extended period of time

Investments into ergonomic workplaces most certainly pay off! Ergonomic and orthopaedic seating options are no longer an expensive option with more and more manufacturers producing ‘posture improving/supportive’ office chairs – but that is just half of the battle!

Another of the messages the organisers of the week will be putting across is to stand and not sit while you work! Some studies suggest that those of us who sit all day live around 2 years less than those who are more active. Standing for just 3 hours a day makes an incredible difference to our posture and our overall wellbeing. Standing for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week burns an additional 750 calories, that is up to 30,000 extra calories a year which is attributable to 8lbs of fat or to running 10 marathons! Now there is no excuse not to consider installing one of the increasing number of sit-stand desks that are available on the market.
