Orangebox, a regular supplier to Metric, has conducted collaborative work with Ecodesign Centre Wales to explore the life cycle and environmental impact of materials used in furniture, while also looking at the implications that upstream production choices might have on a variety of end-of-life scenarios for office chairs.
One of the first outcomes of this research is Orangebox’s ‘ARA’ chair which combines intelligent materials choice and design for recyclability through to cleaner production methods, carbon reduction and practical take-back and recycling services. Detailed attention has also been given to eliminating or substantially minimising toxic and hazardous substances. This is a new generation of chair that also combines improved ergonomics and affordability.
‘ARA’ is the first chair developed and manufactured in Europe to achieve ‘Cradle to Cradle’ (C2C) certification. It is designed for disassembly and recycling and is 98% recyclable. The chair base is 100% recyclable.
