At Metric Interiors we welcome an assessment method which helps to accurately measure how sustainable a fit-out has been. We have been involved in a number of BREEAM and LEED projects which establish the environmental impact of the entire build but we applaud the Royal Intitute of Chartered Surveyors in creating an environmental assessment method which can be applied to commercial fit-outs.

The Ska Rating scores individual projects regardless of the base building. It is scored against a set of sustainability good practice measures covering Energy and CO2, Waste, Water, Materials, Wellbeing, Pollution and Transport with assessments being carried out at three stages – Design, Delivery and Occupancy. Projects can acheive ratings of Bronze, Silver or Gold based on meeting a percentage of measures relevant to the scope of works.

The aim of the Ska Rating is to create more sustainable office space which is in turn good for business as it will:

  • Reduce energy usage resulting in lower bills and operating costs.
  • Create a happy and comfortable work environment with effective cllmate control and lighting. This will help businesses to attract and retain the best people, reduce absenteeism and produce a more effective workforce.
  • Generate an increase in the asset value of labelled low-carbon buildings.
  • A Ska Rating can be used to support any environmental management system in delivering ISO 14001 accreditation and promotes a company’s commitment to environmental issues.

In every office fit-out and refurbishment project we give huge consideration to environmental issues and we support all our customers in their efforts to limit the damage that business can have on the environment by making suitable recommendations at every step of the way. For more details about a Ska Rating contact us or contact the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
