Planning noise into your workspace design

It would seem that the laptop tapping masses filling cafés maybe onto something. According to a recent study, working in a setting with moderate noise—around 70 decibels, or the noise of a bustling coffee shop—boosts productivity!
The study tested more than 300 people in silent, moderate and loud settings. The findings? Those working in moderate noise scored higher on object-word association tests —and gave more innovative answers than the other two groups meaning that noise = creativity
Obviously taking office space at the local Starbucks is not an option and so many companies might want to consider dedicating greater space to communal, ‘chatty’ areas. Breakout spaces where staff can meet and where noise levels are less restricted.

We have seen an increased demand for more relaxed breakout areas and for working/meeting areas within cafeterias. Open plan offices have long been the trend but there is a definite move away from formal meeting and boardrooms to less intimidating environments where people feel free to ‘chat’.
