Project Delivered: St Dominic’s Savio School

We have just been involved with a very special project at St Dominic’s Savio Primary School in Woking. St Dominic’s prides itself on providing a happy and caring Catholic/Christian environment where the moral and spiritual development of their pupils is as important as their physical and intellectual development. With that in mind and with funding gained from the National Lottery we created for them a ‘nurture room’.

The thinking behind this room is that it provides a comfortable space where the children can escape from any stresses and problems that may arise during a school day and give them an experience which will calm and refocus them ready to tackle whatever the day brings.
The space was previously used as a meeting room which we renovated and redecorated, we changed the lighting, supplied soft seating, storage and black-out blinds. We also delivered a hot air balloon manifestation but most exciting of all we fitted sensory equipment comprising coloured bubble lights and an aroma panel which allows calming scents to be released into the room at the press of a button. The children are enthralled and captivated by interactive stories that combine colours, smells and touch – delivering a complete sensory experience. Our fitters were so touched by the reactions of the kids, one of them commented that seeing their faces when they entered the room made the whole project worthwhile!

To further complement the ‘nurture’ room we also created a ‘prayer room’ for the children to take themselves away for some quiet time. We created this through the use of curved and straight partitioning. The school ran a competition amongst all the pupils to design the manifestation that would appear on the glass of the structure. We incorporated the winning design so that it has pride of place on the walls of the ‘prayer room’!
We know that the creation of these ‘time out’ rooms will enrich the school life of the children at St Dominic’s. We look forward to working with them again!
